The purpose of the Citizen's On Patrol Program, also referred to as C.O.P., is to help to develop a feeling of security in our neighborhood by serving as additional eyes and ears of the police through patrolling and basing (basing refers to the action of a person who serves as a dispatch officer for the patrolling C.O.P.s).
Wedgwood Central C.O.P. was organized in May of 1994. It patrols the businesses and residences of our neighborhood and reports any suspicious activities or persons via radio to our Base Operator, also a volunteer C.O.P., located in the neighborhood police department NPD10 at Granbury Road and I-20. The Base Operator then reports the information to the Neighborhood Police Officer (N.P.O.) who is on duty at the time.
C.O.P.s are non-confrontational AT ALL TIMES and maintain a safe distance from the suspicious activity or person(s). C.O.P.s only report what is seen or heard. C.O.P.s patrol as singles or in pairs, whichever is preferred.
C.O.P.s also try to improve the appearance of our neighborhood by reporting defective traffic signs, broken water pipes, graffiti, overgrown yards, improper auto parking in yards, and other city code compliance violations.
All persons living in our neighborhood's boundaries, who have completed their C.O.P. training, participated in a Police "Ride-In", and who patrol and base at their convenience-one or more hours per week (either day or evening) are C.O.P. members.
The police provide us with signs that magnetically adhere to our personal vehicles and radios for communication purposes.
C.O.P.s are provided light blue shirts, jackets, ball-caps, and reflective traffic vests, as well as a C.O.P. call number and badge that identify us as C.O.P. members.
Wedgwood Central Citizens On Patrol is always looking for new members to help serve our community.
For more information, contact Wedgwood Central's C.O.P. Captain, Mr. Roy Combrink crcombrink@sbcglobal.net or contact our neighborhood's N.P.O., Officer Tom Schmidt at 817-871-5474.
